About UCCS
Urban Corps of San Diego County Charter School (UCCS) is a locally funded charter school, authorized by Mono County Office of Education. We form unique and effective collaborations with Corps programs which enable young adults to learn, earn and conserve. What makes the program successful is young people have the ability to earn money while receiving valuable job skills training and obtaining their high school diploma.
Urban Corps Charter School currently has four campuses providing adult high school education programs in San Diego County. These include a primary campus headquarters located at Urban Corps of San Diego County, a separate non-profit in the Midway area of San Diego; the California Conservation Corps (CCC) National City Center, and the CCC's satellite Center in Vista.

Cecilia Villatoro (middle row, fourth from right) became one of the first corpsmembers to receive a high school diploma from Urban Corps' charter school. She went on to receive her Master’s degree in Education and now serves as a teacher at the CCC location.
Our History
Modeled after the original Civilian Conservation Corps which solved the problem of youth unemployment during the Great Depression, the Urban Corps was founded by the San Diego City Council in 1989 as an independent local conservation corps to solve the problem of youth dropping out of high school along with the need to preserve local resources.
From the early years, the Urban Corps has been dedicated to providing a second chance for youth to go back to school and earn their diploma through the combination of a rigorous academic program and essential career-ready skills.
In 1993, Urban Corps partnered with the Vista School District to start The Guajome Park Academy, a unique charter school concept. We became the first conservation corps in California to start an onsite charter school – pioneering an idea that quickly spread throughout other corps up and down the state.
In 2003, Urban Corps partnered with John Muir Charter School. The partnership was a successful one and in 2006, after months of planning and site visits, the Urban Corps and the University of San Diego’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences partnered to create the Urban Corps Assessment and Counseling Clinic (UC-ACC). The collaboration provides corpsmembers the opportunity to receive both personal and career counseling services from graduate students in USD’s Counseling Program. The USD students come to the Corps daily to assess and counsel youth.
Finally, in 2011, the Urban Corps partnered with the Mono County Office of Education to establish the organization’s first independently held charter school – Urban Corps of San Diego County Charter School.
